From twelve chapter “Alice’s evidence”

White rabbit reads:

They told me you had been to her,
And mentioned me to him:
She gave me a good character,
But said I could not swim.

He sent them word I had not gone
(We know it to be true):
If she should push the matter on,
What would become of you?

I gave her one, they gave him two,
You gave us three or more;
They all returned from him to you,
Though they were mine before.

If I or she should chance to be
Involved in this affair,
He trusts to you to set them free,
Exactly as we were.

My notion was that you had been
(Before she had this fit)
An obstacle that came between
Him, and ourselves, and it.

Don’t let him know she liked them best,
For this must ever be
A secret, kept from all the rest,
Between yourself and me.

Cerca modi spediti e disinvolti,
Rime col tiro secco, o versi sciolti
Che vanno avanti a calci nel sedere;
Ma pensa e di’ le cose tali e quali,
Pensatamente schiette e naturali.

Ti reca, amico mio, di gran bei frutti;
E il più soave è l’essere da tutti
E lodato e cercato e importunato.

Il grullo, l’ebete, il porco beato,
Lo spensierato, ed altri farabutti,
Fanno in pace i lor fatti o belli o brutti,

O dare in bestia come l’altra gente.

mentre alberi e legami invecchiano —
ce l’hai nello sguardo quando vinci,
malattia traditora —

Pur non sapendo nuotare;
Ma a lui non andavo a fagiolo,
E disse che io ero al mare.

E non ero andato da loro
(Sappiamo che questo era vero).
Se insiste senza decoro,
La tua sorte sarebbe un mistero.

A lei ne ho dato sol uno,
E lor gliene diedero due;
Tu a noi per nostra fortuna
Ne hai dato tre di amendue.

Poi sono tutti rientrati
Da lui per prendere il tè,
Sebbene fossero stati
Da lei, da me e da te.

Se io o lei poi fossimo
In questa storia implicati,
Sarebbe stato un pessimo
Affare l’esserci andati.

Per me e per lui lei era scaltra
Prima che avesse un attacco;

Fra lui, fra lei e fra noi;

Que tous hommes n’ont pas bon sens rassiz;
Nous sommes mors, ame ne nous harie;

Jamais nul temps nous ne sommes assis;
Ne soyez donc de nostre confrarie;

Hommes, icy n’a point de mocquerie;

To Failure (Philip Larkin) ( 0 Commenti, scrivi tu)

You do not come dramatically, with dragons
That rear up with my life between their paws
And dash me butchered down beside the wagons,
The horses panicking; nor as a clause
Clearly set out to warn what can be lost,
What out-of-pocket charges must be borne,
Expenses met; nor as a draughty ghost
That’s seen, some mornings, running down a lawn.

It is these sunless afternoons, I find,
Instal you at my elbow like a bore.
The chestnut trees are caked with silence. I’m
Aware the days pass quicker than before,
Smell staler too. And once they fall behind
They look like ruin. You have been here some time.

Time long past (Percy Bysshe Shelley) ( 0 Commenti, scrivi tu)

Like the ghost of a dear friend dead
Is Time long past.
A tone which is now forever fled,
A hope which is now forever past,
A love so sweet it could not last,
Was Time long past.

There were sweet dreams in the night
Of Time long past:
And, was it sadness or delight,
Each day a shadow onward cast
Which made us wish it yet might last—
That Time long past.

There is regret, almost remorse,
For Time long past.
‘Tis like a child’s belovèd corse
A father watches, till at last
Beauty is like remembrance, cast
From Time long past.

C’e’ solo una finestra chiusa e tutto il mondo fuori;

dall’ambizione umana riflette
la nostra immagine in loro.
Una scalinata, che la vita sale
e scende bloccata da cancelli
per alcuni insuperabili.
